On Air – Orange Sportscasters and Broadcast Journalists
July 6, 2012 § 2 Comments
SU Day at the Yankees II on June 30th was another unqualified success. Almost 1,300 SU alumni, family, friends and staffers braved the heat and sun of the summer afternoon to witness the Yankees defeat the Chicago White Sox 4-0 in an exciting and (thankfully) quick paced game. Orange faithful greeted Otto in the Great Hall, met Mr. October, Reggie Jackson, at the Turkey Hill pre-game picnic, and, in the Malibu Terrace Bar, joined famous SU alumnus, “Newsroom” Executive Producer and recent commencement speaker Aaron Sorkin, hosted by National Alumni Board member Contessa Brewer. Alumnus and Head Coach of the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants Tom Coughlin threw out the ceremonial first pitch and said some very nice things about SU. And, finally, the Yankees recognized SU Day by videos and other displays on the jumbo screen in centerfield. Suffice it to say, New York’s College Team made its large presence known throughout the Stadium.
I was also fortunate to attend this year’s NBA Draft at Prudential Center in Newark to witness the drafting in the first and second rounds of three members of the 2011-2012 record-setting men’s basketball team. Dione Waiters was selected fourth by the Cleveland Cavaliers and Fab Melo was selected 22nd and Kris Joseph 51st by the Boston Celtics. We wish them well in their NBA careers.
While many graduates have gone on to become successful in professional sports, SU also has the reputation of being the starting point for many well known sportscasters and broadcast journalists, some of whom are now familiar names.
For example, most know of Marv Albert, Len Berman, Bob Costas, Ian Eagle, Marty Glickman, Sean McDonough, Dave Ryan, Dick Stockton, Mike Tirico and Craig Carton. Others include David Amber, Damon Amendolara, Gary Apple, Steve Bunin, Ed Coleman, Matthew Berry, Joe Castiglione, Michael Cole, Bob Neumeier, Dave Pasch, Adam Schlein, Anish Shroff and Jayson Stark. I am sure that there are more and invite you to leave a comment with any I may have omitted.
There are also many SU alumni who have “made it to the big leagues” of broadcast journalism, including Contessa, Samantha Brown, Jeff Glor, Megyn Kelly, Ted Koppel, Steve Kroft and Lakshmi Singh. No list would be complete without a special mention of great journalism alumni S.I. Newhouse, Jr., David Levy of Turner Entertainment Group, my new fellow Trustee, Larry Kramer of USA Today, and John Sykes. Again, if there are any I may have missed, please leave a comment so that they are properly recognized.
I wish each of you a very good summer and look forward to seeing you at a New Student Sendoff, the “Battle in the Apple” on September 8th when SU welcomes USC to MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, at Campaign Celebration Weekend on November 2-4, 2012, at Orange Central on November 9-11, 2012 or at one of the many other, exciting SU events planned for the fall.
Until then, “good night and good luck,” and Go Orange!
Brian
